About Bharat....

Based in Ashton-Under-Lyne, Bharat Makanji has displayed his work throughout the country.

Bharat, who is self taught, first began painting when the recession in the 1980s left him redundant. His attraction to the medium of watercolour was the combination of freedom and fluidity it offered, but also the necessity to retain complete control of the medium to show its gracefulness.

His paintings are loose and atmospheric landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes and the places he has visited in England and abroad. Bharat works with a limited palette, to encapsulate the essence of a moment and portrays to an observer the emotion contained in that scene. He also aims to achieve an impression of his individuality.

His latest exploration is Art on Glass. The abstract artwork is on glass to create vibrant unique pieces of work which provoke different reactions in the viewer. He focuses on recognisable subjects within the world where we sometimes only see fragments and disconnections and yet we understand them universally. Painting on the glass in reverse means his very first stroke holds the most integrity.
